The Weekend Debacle

After a very promising series against the Cardinals last week, in which they took 3 out of 4 from the NL Central leaders, the New York Metropolitans looked to duke it out with their cross town rivals this past weekend. Unfortunately, the series ended up like these Butterbean fights.

The Yankees’ sweep of the Mets was truly embarrassing. Over the three game series, the Mets had as many runs as errors (3) and the Yankees scored twice as many runs (18) as the Mets had hits. There is absolutely nothing positive to take away from this series. It really is a shame too especially after the Mets showed so much fight against a good St. Louis team. We can’t have too high expectations for this Mets team, but that doesn’t make these stats any less pathetic.

The Mets’ schedule won’t give them a break either; they play Milwaukee, Philadelphia, and LA next. And with Carlos Beltran seeking more opinions on his injured knee, the Mets may be without their array of star-powered hitters for longer than they expected. To make matters worse, the Mets really don’t have the means to make a meaningful midseason trade. With the exception of David Wright, their current roster does not have one position player worth starting on any other team and Fernando Martinez does not carry the same “elite prospect” tag he once did. The Mets can not afford to trade any of their pitchers either if they want to continue to compete for a playoff spot. The farm system is also devoid of any coveted players. General manager Omar Minaya has come under heat as of late for not securing a more solid bench in the offseason and failing to pick up help now that the Mets need it. The truth is that no GM could compensate for the injuries the Mets have had to endure. Minaya’s real fault lies in not restocking the farm system during his tenure in New York.

The Mets currently are trailing Milwaukee in the bottom of the 6th, 3-2. If they can’t stay afloat until they get some of their starters back, it may lead to more than Omar Minaya’s dismissal.
