According to the MetsBlog.com, Oliver Perez has agreed to sign a 3-year, $36 million deal. There was rumors that there might be a fourth year option, but it looks as if Ollie and the Mets are content with a three year deal.
This is another great signing by Omar Minaya. I think Perez is the best pitcher available (Sheets is too high of an injury risk) and the Mets are going to sign him for much less than what Perez was originally asking for. When you look at the team that Omar has assembled, so far, on paper; it’s pretty much the same team they had last year. K-Rod and Putz improves the bullpen vastly, but the starting five and the lineup will be almost exactly the same. MLB Trade Rumors reported that the Mets are definitely not among the rapidly shrinking Manny Ramirez suitors, and added that they will probably only be going after bench players for the rest of the off season.
While I think that the past five months have been a success for the Mets because they improved upon their largest weakness from last season; I’m not extatic about their lack of activity in other areas of the team. They still need a better corner outfielder, and I’m not sure if Delgado will produce like he did in the second half of last season. It would have been nice to get rid of Luis Castillo, but they didn’t even pick up a decent back-up option for him (which they will need). I’m not completely sold that Minaya is done making some big moves, but we’ll have to wait and see.
